Customs Begins Sale Of 50kg Rice at N20,000 At Its Formations Nationwide

Nigeria Customs Service has begun the sale of food items seized from smugglers to the public to crash the soaring prices of foodstuff nationwide.

Items include 20,000 50-kilogram bag of parboiled rice, beans, maize, millet, guinea corn, soya beans, as well as 2,500 cartons and 963 bags of dried fish.

Others are dried pepper, tomato, cooking oil, seasoning cubes, macaroni, salt and sugar.

Customs Comptroller General, Wale Adeniyi flagging off the sale at the customs zone one headquarters in Lagos, on Friday, said it must not be resold, or found in markets or commercial stores.

Adeniyi said a 25-kilogram bag of rice would be sold for N10,000- and 50-kilogram bag for N20,000.

The comptroller general said the sale would begin today at customs formations to targeted groups, including faith-based organizations, artisans, teachers and other groups.

He, however, disclosed that the items will be sold to only Nigerians with genuine needs and will work with the Police Force to maintain the integrity of the exercise.

According to him, the criteria include having a verifiable National Identity Number (NIN) and the targeted beneficiaries are faith-based organisations, artisans, teachers, among others
