Police Begin Clampdown on Motorcyclists Wearing Tinted Reflective Helmets

Police in Ogun State say they have started clamping down on motorcyclists wearing unauthorised helmets, mostly tinted reflective, to reduce the level of crimes in the state.

They also said most of such motorcyclists are wrapping bandanas around their faces, leaving only their eyes visible to the people.

The state police command say that most of the wearers of such targeted helmets were posing as motorcyclists to rob unsuspecting passengers.

Already, four suspects, Joseph Itodo, Johnson Joseph, Ugwu Samson and Osinowo Seyi, as well as five others have been arrested in Ijebu Ode.

The command in a statement by its spokesperson, Omolola Odutola, those arrested are undergoing interrogation at the Ijebu Ode Police Divisional Headquarters.

She said that wearing of such unauthorized helmets was assisting criminals to disguise their identities to carry out illegal activities.

“The Police urge passengers to exercise caution by conducting identity checks on motorcycle riders before getting on board. This precaution is essential to avoid potential kidnappings and robberies targeting unsuspecting victims. It is crucial for passengers to be vigilant, especially when dealing with fully masked riders”.

The State’s Commissioner of Police, CP Alamutu Abiodun Mustapha said the police would continue to provide updates and disseminate information to the public regarding the trend, while “we seek to unravel the extent of this issue and further crackdown on those involved in such criminal activities”.
