Ogun Assembly to Begin Review of the Seven Year Old Land Grabbing Law

Ogun State House of Assembly is to begin a review of the state Anti-Land Grabbing Law 2016.

The amendment of the bill, titled ‘Prohibition of Forcible Occupation of Landed Property Law 2016’, is to address the rising cases of hoodlums encroaching on land across the State.

The speaker, Olakunle Oluomo, announced the planned review of the law, during the Thursday plenary,  after the  presentation of various petitions by some lawmakers, on the increasing activities of land grabbers in their constituencies.

The speaker said the amendment was necessary, in view of diverse opinions of relevant stakeholders for the effective implementation of the law.

He assured that the tenth legislature under his leadership, would work with ministries, departments and agencies, as well as relevant stakeholders, to amend the law to cope with the fresh threat posed by land grabbers in the state.

The speaker commended the state surveyor general for setting up a task force for the enforcement of the law.

According the existing law, anyone found guilty of land grabbing is liable to 25 years imprisonment or death sentence.

According to the law, death sentence applies when a life is or lives are lost in such forceful takeover of land.

Kidnappers also risk life sentence.
