Again, National Power Grid Collapses, Second Time This Year

Again, the National Power Grid collapsed on Thursday, disrupting electricity supply nationwide.

The collapse was the second this year, and forty eighth between 2017 to date.

The fresh collapse started 4.30 P.M. on Thursday when the power supply on the grid dropped to 2,984 megawatts.

By 5 P.M., 21 power plants were off the grid.

An hour later, only Azura Power Plant in Edo state had only 54 megawatts on the grid.

As at early today, all the major plants, including Egbin, Afam, Geregu, Ibom Power, Jebba, Kainji, Odukpani, Olorunsogo, and Omotosho were off the grid.

We appeal for your understanding as all stakeholders are working hard to restore normal supply, the Abuja DisCo said.

Also, the Eko Electricity Distribution Company said: Dear valued customer, kindly be informed there was a system collapse at 16:28hrs which has resulted in a loss of power supply across our network.

We are currently working with our partners as we hope for speedy restoration of the grid. We will keep you updated as soon as the power supply is restored. Kindly bear with us.

Power generation figures obtained from TCN at the time showed that electricity on the system moved up to 115.4MW around 3 pm on December 11, 2023, before rising further to 240.9MW at about 4 pm.

Nigeria’s national power grid collapsed 46 times from 2017 to 2023, a report by the International Energy Agency said in a report.

According to the report, Nigerians endured more nationwide blackouts in 2023, especially on September 14 when the grid collapsed due to a fire on a major transmission line.
