Egbin Power Station Temporarily Shut Down for Maintenance

Egbin, Nigeria’s largest power station near Epe, is undergoing maintenance, removing 676 megawatts of electricity from the national grid daily for three days.

The Transmission Company of Nigeria announced the three-day shutdown on Monday morning via its official handle.

According to the company, the shutdown would allow the Nigeria gas company to maintain the pipeline feeding the plant with natural gas from the Niger Delta region.

Egbin power plant commissioned mid-1980s has an installed capacity to generate 1,320 megawatts, contributing about 16 per cent of electricity generated into the national power grid.

TCN had 24 hours earlier reported that at about 7:57 pm on Saturday, 16th December 2023, there was a fire incident, following an explosion of capacitor voltage transformer on the Maryland-lkorodu 132/33kV transmission line 2.

This necessitated the emergency opening of the substation at 7 58pm, which entailed the isolation of Maryland-llupeju 132kV line 1, which was the source of power supply to the substation.

Mbah stated that they tried to extinguish the fire, but the presence of oil-immersed equipment in the surrounding area made it challenging.

The Lagos State Fire Service arrived at 8:45 pm and completely extinguished the fire by 8:55 pm. The substation was restored back into service at 9:02 p.m. on the same day.

TCN said it was diligently pursuing the reconductoring/rehabilitating of all its 132kV transmission lines and switchgears nationwide, which would greatly help eliminate such incidents.
