National Power Grid Collapsed Again On Monday, Restored Monday Night

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) says it has restored the national power grid which collapsed on Monday afternoon, plunging the country into darkness for many hours.

The grid, according to TCN, again collapsed at 1.40 P.M., cutting four thousand and 32 megawatts of electricity from the grid.

By 5 P.M. on Monday, over 22 power plants recorded zero megawatts, according to the system network of the TCN.

Only the Ibom Power Plant had 303 megawatts.

Later in the evening, TCN in a statement by its spokesperson, Ndidi Mbah, said the collapsed grid had been fully restored.

Two months ago, the grid collapsed twice within six six-hour intervals.

The report showed that power generation on the grid crashed from a peak of 3,594.60 megawatts at midnight to 42.7MW by midday of September 19, 2023.

It had earlier reported in the same month of September that  the Federal Government explained that the nationwide blackout witnessed was due to a fire incident and an explosion on the Kainji/Jebba 330kV line 2.

Power consumers, however, kicked against the never-ending excuses of the government as regards power generation and supply in Nigeria, despite privatizing the generation and distribution arms of the sector since November 2013.

However, the Nigerian Power Consumers Forum condemned the spate of disturbances on the national electricity grid and the fire incidents around power transmission infrastructure.

NPCF’s Convener, Michael Okoh, had raised the concern in a statement issued in Abuja.
