Obasanjo Opposes Culture Discriminating Against Girl Child Education

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has made a strong case for the girl child, promising to do all within his capacity to promote it.

He also canvassed the killing of any culture which give preference to a male child to female child.

The former president also said woe betides anyone who attempted to tamper with girl child education.

Obasanjo made the call on Tuesday in Abeokuta, during a seminar on the 2022 World Diabetes Day events, organized by The Olusegun Obasanjo Foundation.

The ongoing free health check, including diabetes and eye tests and NCD which stated on Monday at The Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library, Abeokuta, is part of the activities lined up by the foundation to make the 2022 World Diabetes Day.

Obasanjo said his passion for the girl child education was largely influenced by his personal experience, which made him to include girl child education among the focus of the foundation.

He recalled how the education of her junior sister in the primary school was cut short by his father and one of his wives at their Ibogun village, because she was a girl child.

Obasanjo said the forceful withdrawal of her junior sister from school affected her development into adulthood.

According to Obasanjo, when he eventually returned from London, he could not return her to school because she had been given away in marriage.
