Curfew Imposed On Sagamu, Following Cultists Clashes, Leaving Eight Persons Killed

A dusk-to-dawn curfew has been imposed on Sagamu in Ogun State, after the supremacy fight between rival cult groups left eight persons dead in the town. The situation is now very tense in the town.

Governor Dapo Abiodun, announcing the curfew on Monday night, said there would be no human and vehicular movement between 7 pm and 6 am until further notice.

The Governor, in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Lekan Adeniran asked residents of the town to comply with the directive, and to co-operate with security agencies to restore normalcy.

He also said the curfew would facilitate the firm control of security architecture of the town, to protect lives and property.

Earlier, the Governor had ordered security agencies to clampdown on cultists in the town and flush them out.

The State Police Commissioner, Abiodun Alamutu at a news conference in Abeokuta, the state capital, traced the fresh cultist’s attacks in Sagamu, to a land transaction in the area.

According to the Police Chief, after the sale of the land, its owners paid commission on the transaction to a cultist group in the area.

He said a rival cultist group demanded its share of the commission, leading to a fight from last Wednesday till Sunday.

Police on Monday, said they had arrested nine suspected cultists, and had since tightened their grip on the town and its neighboring communities.

The fighting among the cultists started last Friday, between members of the Eiye and Aye Confraternity, lasting until Monday morning.

The four day fighting had caused panic in the town, and paralyzed commercial activities.

In another development, the Force Spokesman, Olumuyiwa Adejobi has said that the cultist’s attacks in Sagamu could not be singlehandedly tackled by the police.

The Assistant Police Commissioner, on his X (formerly Twitter) social media handle, said the issue has gone beyond the anti-cultist squad being deployed to the town.

According to Adejobi, who once served as the Ogun State Police Command Spokesman, only elders of the town and politicians in the state, could contain the cultists.

Adejobi said most of the attacks by the cultists in Sagamu, were being carried out by cultists from Ago Iwoye, Ijebu Ode and Edo State.

The Force Spokesman, however, said that almost everyone in the town, is involved in cultist related activities.

He promised to engage the state police commissioner on the threat posed by the cultists.
