Sultan Announces Wednesday for Eid El Fitri, Celebration, Ramadan Fasting Continues Today

President General of the Nigeria Supreme Council on Islamic Affairs, Alhaji Saad Abubakar, the Sultan of Sokoto, has declared Wednesday as the day for the celebration of the 2024 Eid El Fitri in Nigeria.

With the announcement made on Monday night, Muslims in the country are today observing Ramadan fast.

The Sultan said the Eid El Fitri will not be celebrated today in Nigeria, because the new moon of Ramadan was not sighted throughout the country on Monday.

The Sultan in a statement issued by the chairman of the sultanate advisory committee on religious affairs, Professor Sambo Jinadu, said the decision was based on the report of the moon sighting committee nationwide.

He said the council has accepted the report of the non-sighting of the new moon and fixed the Eid Al Fitri for Wednesday.

The Sultan urged Muslim community in Nigeria to continue praying for peace, progress and development of the country.

The Federal Government had declared today and tomorrow as a holiday for the celebration before the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia while announcing that the moon was not sighted, declared tomorrow as Eid-el-Fitr.

Meanwhile, to mark the 2024 Eid-el-Fitr celebrations across the country, security agencies, including the Police, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Federal Road Safety Corps, state security outfits and others have deployed personnel to protect worship centres, direct traffic and ensure a hitch-free event.

In preparation for a hitch-free celebration, the Commandant-General, NSCDC, Ahmed Audi, ordered the strategic deployment of over 40,000 personnel across the federation.

Audi gave the directive based on current security challenges and the need to proactively tackle crimes.
