EFCC Recovers Over N30 Billion, Investigating 50 Banks Accounts in The Humanitarian Ministry

Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) says it has recovered over N30 billion in its ongoing investigations of the alleged stealing of fund at the ministry of humanitarian affairs and poverty alleviation.

Also, the anti-graft agency says it is investigating over fifty banks accounts which EFCC operatives had tracked stolen fund from the ministry into.

EFCC chairman, Olu Olukoyede, who made this known in the march edition of the agency’s magazine, did not give details of the N30 billion recovered or the over 50 banks accounts being investigated.

He, however, said the recovered fund had been paid into the coffer of federal government.

Both the minister in-charge of the ministry, Dr. Beta Edu and the chief executive officer of the national social investment program authority, Halima Sheu, are being investigated over alleged stealing of fund from the ministry’s account.

President Tinubu suspended both of them three months ago and directed EFCC to investigate the ministry.

Olukoyede said EFCC operatives are exploring so many leads they stumbled upon during the ongoing investigations.

The EFCC chairman asked Nigerians to give the agency the benefit of doubts in the investigation of the ministry.

There are cases that take years to investigate. There are so many angles to it. And we need to follow through with some of the discoveries that we have seen. Nigerians should give us time on this matter; we have professionals on this case and they need to do things right. There are so many leads here and there.

As it is now, we are investigating over 50 bank accounts that we have traced money into. That is no child’s play. That’s a big deal. Then you ask about my staff strength. And again, we have thousands of other cases that we are working on.

Nigerians have seen the impact of what we have done so far, by way of some people being placed on suspension and by way of the recoveries that we have made. You have seen that the programme itself has been suspended.

We are exploring so many discoveries that we have stumbled upon in our investigation. If it is about seeing people in jail, we will let them wait, everything has a process to follow. So, Nigerians should wait and give us the benefit of the doubt.
