Police Arrests More Suspects In Connection With the Recent Cultists’ Clashes in Sagamu

Police have arrested more suspects in connection with recent cultists’ bloody rivalry clashes in Sagamu in Ogun State.

The fresh arrests has risen to 19 the number of suspected cultists so far arrested over the bloody clashes which left eight persons dead.

Those arrested were Sodipo Azeez, also known as Bintobo, Ilori Gbenga, Lamina Yusuf, Kolawole Rasaq, Adelaja Otusanya, Adeyemi Soneye, Oseni Toheeb, Thankgod Naba, Lekan Qudus, Adelusi Omotayo, Timothy Monday, Ayomide Ishmael, Oboje Jeremiah, Ayoola Oladayo, Jacob Chidi, John Innocent, Ayangbile Victor and Jacob Sunday.

One of those arrested was Ogunubi Hammed, described by the police as the leader of Eiye Confraternity in the area.

Spokesperson of the Ogun State police command, Omolola Odutola said the suspects were arrested during a tactical operations conducted by the police in the area on Sunday.

Police units which participated in the special operations are Anti-cultists Squad, Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) and officers from the Obalende police division in Ijebu Ode.

She said that those targeted in the tactical operation are cultists involved in attacks in Sagamu, Odogbolu and other parts of the State.

She noted that the state commissioner of police, Abiodun Alamutu, has ordered immediate investigation of the individuals arrested while assuring that the public will be duly informed of further development on the case.
“The Commissioner of Police (CP) is informed about the arrests and has ordered an immediate investigation into the individuals apprehended. As the investigation progresses, the police will provide updates to the public regarding any relevant developments in this case,” Odutola concluded.
The state police Command, in conjunction with the Vigilante Group of Nigeria on September 19, 2023 arrested seven suspected cultists and also recovered firearms, three live cartridges and criminal charms in connection with the cult clashes in Sagamu.
The raid was conducted in response to the cult clash between two rival cult groups known as Aiye and Eiye, resulting in the death of four individuals at Ewu Iya in Sakura area of the state.
