Health workers at the Nigeria’s Premier Hospital, the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, have resolved to suspend evening and night shifts.

The staff say they will now work between 8 am and 4 pm daily, until the electricity supply to the hospital, disconnected by the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company, is restored.

IBEDC cuts the power supply over a huge unpaid power bill which the hospital’s management is disputing.

Chairman of the hospital unions’ joint action committee, Oludayo Olabanpe on Tuesday, said the power supply was cut since March 19, this year.

According to him, they would not admit patients because nurses who would take care of them would not be available as from 4 P.M.

The committee also gave the hospital management a 14 day deadline, which started from last March 27, to restore power.

The committee says the staff would graduate their work-to-rule to a seven day warning strike, if the power was not restored by the expiration of the deadline.

Chief medical director of the hospital, Prof. Jesse Otegbayo said the committee has not formally notified the management of their decision.
