Tension as School Management Clashes with Students Over Sharp Tuition Fee Hike in OOU

Tension is brewing at the Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU), Ago Iwoye, following the continued face-off between the school management and the students over the sharp increase in the tuition fee.

The two-meeting held by the school management with the student union government so far had deadlocked without any agreement.

the management had insisted on the new tuition fees ranging from N190,000 to N475,000 depending on the program, which the student union government regarded as outrageous.

The students union government during the last meeting had proposed 30 per cent increase of the old tuition fee, but the management said it was inadequate to run the university.

Amidst the stalemate, the University Registrar, Femi Ogunwomoju, in a public notice last Friday, directed the freshmen and returning students to begin online registration for the 2023/2024 academic session by January 4.

The registrar also said that indefinite online lecture would begin on January 8, 2024, asking students not to resume for physical lecture.

The student union government in a counterstatement on Sunday, directed students to resume physically on campus on January 3, to strategize on the way forward.

The union in the statement, said it has not reached any agreement with the management on the issue at stake, and opposed indefinite online lecture which according to it, has done more harm to students because of its inefficiency.

The union also said the university must reverse the new tuition fee.
