Presidency Reaches Tentative Deal on Labour’s Palliative Demands, Strike May Be Called Off

Presidency Reaches Tentative Deal on Labour’s Palliative Demands, Strike May Be Called Off

Federal Government and the Organized Labour, have reached a tentative deal which may prevent the indefinite strike, scheduled to take off at today’s midnight.

Leaders of the Organized Labour, gave this indication, while addressing newsmen at the end of fresh negotiations with federal government, which lasted into late Sunday.

The Labour Leaders said that Federal Government’s offers during the meeting would be tabled before their various congresses today, to decide if the planned strike would go on, as scheduled or called off.

One of the offers of the Federal Government was the suspension of 7.5 per cent value added tax (vat) on imported diesel for six months.

Also, it agreed to pay N25,000 monthly for the next six months to 15 million households, for the next six months, as well as the provision for fund to micro-small scale enterprises.

Federal Government also agreed to pay N35, 000 monthly wage award for the next six months to all the staff on its payroll.

Both the Labour and Federal Government delegations agreed to set up a sub-committee, to work out the modalities for the implementation of all the details of the tentative agreements for consideration.

Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila led Federal Government team to the meeting, while NLC President, Joe Ajaero, and TUC Deputy National President, Doctor Tommy Okon.

Gbajabiamila hopes the Organized Labour would call off the planned strike after considering the offers.
