Ogun to Provide Shelter for Victims of Sexual Abuse and Other Gender Based Violence

Ogun State Government has promised to provide a befitting accommodation for victims of sexual abuse and other form of gender-based violence in the state.

The beneficiaries would be victims of sexual harassment or those subjected to forms of gender-based violence, who have nowhere to go after being abused.

He instructed the secretary to the state government to work with the housing ministry to identify a building to serve as a befitting shelter for the victims.

Alternatively, the Abiodun said a parcel of land should be identified to construct the proposed shelter.

The Governor stated this, while receiving at the Governor Office, Oke Mosan, Abeokuta, his wife, Mrs. Bamidele Abiodun and other women, who staged a road show as part of activities to mark 16 days action against gender-based violence.

Abiodun says the proposed shelter would save the victims from the social stigma usually associated with gender-based violence.

The Governor also said that his administration would institute a gender-based violence trust fund to finance the victims of gender-based violence in the state.

He, however, said attention should also be paid to the violence against men, who are also being abused by women, but opted to keep silent.

Mrs. Bamidele Abiodun had earlier noted that there was an increase in the cases on incest and rape in the society and called for a safe place for the victims of sexual abuse and other forms of gender-based violence.
