Police in Ogun state say they have rescued nine out of the ten Lagos state Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leaders, kidnapped by gunmen along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

One of those rescued after four days in the captivity of the kidnappers was Lagos state PDP Chairman, Phillip Avioji.

But another PDP leader, Bilikisu Kazeem, died of bullet injuries during the exchange of gunfire between police and the kidnappers.

The State Police Commissioner, Abiodun Alamutu, addressing a news conference on Monday in Abeokuta, said the nine PDP leaders were released in the early hours of Monday.

The ten PDP leaders were kidnapped by gunmen last Thursday, at the Ogere axis of the expressway on their way from Ibadan, where they had attended the zonal meeting of the southwest PDP.

The kidnappers later reached out to his family, demanding a N200 million ransom, before he could be released.

The police commissioner said he was not aware of any ransom being paid before they could be rescued from the gunmen.

He condoled the family of the PDP member who died of a gunshot.

The police had, on Saturday, claimed in a statement issued on behalf of the command by Mr Omolola Odutola, the Public Relations Officer, that its operatives were making concerted efforts to free the kidnapped PDP officials unhurt.

Alamutu commiserated with the family of 37-year-old Bilikisu Kazeem, who died as a result of the bullet wound he sustained during the incident.
