Bankers Forum has resolved to suspend the operation of banks in Ogun State, following the deadly attacks on banks in the state over the naira swap policy of the central bank of Nigeria.

The forum took the decision on Tuesday, in the wake of Monday’s deadly protests in Sagamu, in which two banks were set ablaze and several others in the town vandalized by protesters.

The bankers, in a communiqué issued on Tuesday, said banks in the state would remain shut, until an improved security on banks buildings are guaranteed.

According to the forum, it would ensure the safety of staff of the banks first, while engaging the state government and relevant agencies on security issues.

The bankers expressed concern that in the past two weeks, banks have been attacked at Asero and Aapon in Abeokuta, as well as in Sango Ota, Mowe and Ibafo.

They were worried that security operatives have failed to respond to attacks on banks in Sagamu on Monday, until all banks in the town were vandalized.

Rockcity FM reported that angry bank customers have staged violent protests in Abeokuta, the Ogun State Capital against the continued hardships they are facing in withdrawing naira notes from their bank accounts.

Protesters made bonfire and blocked major roads, including Asero, Adatan, Obantoko, Gbonagun, Aladesanmi, Abiola Way, Sapon, Lafenwa, Ibara, Pansheke, Ake and Oke ilewo areas of Abeokuta.

One of the protesters was shot at Sapon, while several others were injured at various parts of the city during the protests.
