Labour Suspends Strike for 30 Days, After Agreement with Federal Government

The Organized Labour has suspended its planned indefinite strike, scheduled to begin today, following an agreement signed with the Federal Government.

The strike is to be put on hold for 30 days, according to the agreement signed on Monday night at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

The agreement is to be filed with the relevant court of jurisdiction within the next one week, as consequent judgement on their dispute.

According to the 15 point agreement, a committee is to be constituted within a month, for the negotiation of a new national minimum wage.

Others are the payment of N35,000 monthly wage award, to all federal government staff, as from September, pending when the proposed new national minimum wage would be signed into law.

Also, the 7.5 percent value added tax on imported diesel will be suspended for six months as from October, as well as, voting of N100 billion for purchase of high capacity Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses for mass transit.

The roll-out of the CNG buses is from November with pilot scheme in 10 universities campuses.

There will also be initial release of 55,000 CNG conversion kits to kick start an auto conversion to gas programme, along with the provision of CBN filling stations nationwide.

Federal government also agreed to provide various tax incentives for the private sector and the general public.

“On the leadership crises rocking the NURTW and the purported proscription of RTEAN, the Federal Government commits to handling Labour matters in line with relevant ILO Conventions and Nigerian Labour Acts. A resolution of the ongoing impasse is expected by or before October 13.

Also, the issue of unpaid members of the academic staff union of universities is to be referred to the Labour ministry for further engagement.

There would also be a joint visitation by a team of Labour and government to the local refineries undergoing rehabilitation.
