House of Reps Consider Review Of Student Loan Act, Asks Public Varsities Not To Increase Fees

The House of Representatives has asked public Tertiary Educational Institutions in the country, not to take advantage of the proposed student loan to increase their tuition fees.

The house passed the resolution, following a motion raised by Terser Ugbor during the Thursday plenary.

It sets up an ad hoc committee to convene a fresh legislative session on the loan act, with all major stakeholders in the Tertiary Education sector.

Some of the public Universities, including University of Benin, Bayero University, Kano,  and Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, had announced new tuition fees ranging from over N100,000 to N700,000 per session.

Others like Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife, University of Ibadan, the University of Lagos, and several others, are set to announce their new tuition fee regime.

The lawmaker in his motion, had said the stoppage of a fresh hike in the tuition fee was necessary, following several ommission and identifiable bottlenecks that could frustrate the implementation of the student loan act.

He calls for immediate further legislative action for an effective implementation of the loan act.
