Gunmen Attack Church in Ebonyi During Christmas Mass, Kill Three Worshippers, Injure Others

Gunmen have attacked a church during a Christmas vigil mass in Ebonyi state, killing three worshippers.

Other worshippers were injured during when the gunmen invaded the immaculate conception church, Ikweagu in Abakaliki on Sunday.

The Catholic Bishop for Abakaliki diocese, Most Reverend Peter Nworie, announced the incident during the Christmas service on Monday at Saint Theresa Cathedral in Abakaliki.

The bishop condemned the act, said it was a sacrilege.

Also on Christmas Eve, suspected cultists killed four persons, including a broadcaster and a vigilante commander, in Benin city.

They were killed in a reprisal attack in the ongoing battle for supremacy between the black axe and eye confraternities in the Edo state capital.

The broadcaster, Hilary Odia was shot dead at his Esigie residence, while the vigilante commander was ambushed and shit dead by the cultists.

The cultists also shot two persons dead at Uwa and Nekpennepon streets.

Spokesman of the State Police Command, Chidi Nwanbunor confirmed the killings, but said the command was still collating details of the attacks.

While condemning the killing of the three worshippers, the clergyman described the incident as sad and disheartening and prayed for the repose of their souls.

Meanwhile, all efforts to get a reaction from Ebonyi State Police Command were fruitless as the command was yet to get a new spokesperson.
