Gunmen Attack Sunshine Stars of Akure Bus, Injure Players and Officials

Gunmen have intercepted the bus conveying players and officials of the Sunshine Stars of Akure FC on their way for match day 13 of the Nigerian Premier Football League in Benin City.

The club was billed to face Bendel Insurance FC of Benin City. The gunmen attacked the team officials in their bus along the Ore-Benin Expressway on Thursday.

The team manager was shot in the chest, along with the ball boy. Other management officials and some of the players also sustained gunshot injuries.

The team’s media officer, Michael Akintunde, confirmed the incident.

He says the Federal Road Safety Corps officer assisted in rushing the injured team officials and players to a hospital in the axis.

According to Akintunde, “It saddens our hearts to inform Nigerians, especially football lovers that our team was attacked a few minutes ago along the Benin-Ore Expressway.

“The horrible incident happened to the team as they were on their way to honor an Elite League tie against Insurance of Benin, scheduled for this weekend.

“Our ball boy was shot in the horrible attack.

“Also, our team manager and other club officials including players are seriously injured.”

The Sunshine Stars official noted it took the intervention of the Federal Road Safety Corp (FRSC) officers, who rescued and took the injured officials and the individual shot to a nearby hospital.

Akintunde called on Nigerians and football lovers to join them in prayers.
