Nigeria’s Super Falcons have secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over their arch-rivals, the indomitable lionesses of Cameroon, in the second leg of the Olympic qualifiers third round.

The much-needed win at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium ensures the qualification of the nine-time African champions to the fourth round of qualifiers

They will now square off against the eventual winner between South Africa and Tanzania who will play against each other once more on the 27th of February.

After the Nigerian Falcons failed to convert chances in Douala, Randy Waldrum made two changes to the lineup, with Jennifer Echegini and Esther Okoronkwo stepping in for Asisat Oshoala and Halimatu Ayinde.

The decision to bench Oshoala raised eyebrows among football enthusiasts in Nigeria, marking a bold and unexpected move.

However, the decision proved decisive, with both Jennifer Echegini and Esther Okoronkwo making notable contributions in the opening goal.

Nnadozie was again called into action on the hour mark to deny Cameroon when Marie Ngah Manga got her head to a cross by the energetic substitute Marie Enganemben.

The Lionesses finished with 10 women when the volatile Enganemben was sent off over a push on Nnadozie during a bizarre rush by Cameroonian players to get the equalizer.

Randy Waldrum’s ladies now await the winners of the game between South Africa and Tanzania, which will be played on Tuesday (today) with the reigning African champions holding a 3-0 advantage from the first leg in Dar es Salaam.

The Falcons haven’t qualified for the Olympics since Beijing 2008 and the final clash to redeem that comes up in April.
