EFCC Bans Operatives from Sting Operations At Night

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has directed its operatives to stop sting operations at nights.

The agency chairman, Ola Olukoyede issued the directive in a reviewed procedure on arrests and bail of suspects by the operatives.

Olukoyode in a statement signed by EFCC spokesman, Dele Oyewale banned sting operations at nights, following Wednesday’s raid on some off campus hostels of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife.

During the raid of two of the hostels located in Oduduwa axis of the town, 69 students were taken away by EFCC operatives who invaded the hostels at about 2 am on Wednesday.

Student’s union government (SUG) of the university later mobilized students to the EFCC zonal office in Ibadan, to protest the raid.

EFCC later on its website on Wednesday night said, it had released most of the arrested students, promising to complete the profiling of those yet to be profiled, which would be completed without further delay.

During the operation, EFCC said it seized some exotic cars, 190 mobile phones and 40 laptops, adding that cyber crime suspects among them had made useful statements and would be charged to court.

Oyewale said, “The chairman gave the directive in Abuja on Wednesday, November 1, 2023 in reaction to the arrest of 69 suspected internet fraudsters in Ile-Ife, Osun State, by operatives of the Ibadan zonal command of the commission.

“Already, many of the suspects duly profiled by the command have been released, while profiling of suspects yet unreleased will be completed, without further delay.

“The commission wishes to assure the public that it will not relent in its adherence to the rule of law, in the exercise of its mandate.”
