Suspected Arsons Set INEC Office On Fire In Abeokuta

Office of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in the Abeokuta South Local Government Area of Ogun State capital, has been gutted by fire.

Suspected arsonists were believed to have set the office on fire.

The fire started shortly after 12 midnight today at the INEC office located at Iyana Mortuary, collapsing the back wall of the office.

Non sensitive electoral material, and standby electricity generating sets were destroyed in the fire.

The state INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner, Niyi Ijalaye told a Rockcity Correspondent, Tobi Ojeleye, that the level of the extent of damage done by the fire on the office, was still being assessed.

Earlier, the Electoral Officer in-charge of the INEC office, Olayiwola confirmed to Rockcity FM that all sensitive materials, including the Permanent Voter Card (PVC) were still intact in a fire proof vault in the office.

According to the Electoral Officer, he was alerted by security guards that some persons he believed were armed robbers had scaled the fence into the INEC office.

Olayiwola, however, said before the police who were alerted, could arrived, there had been a fire outbreak in the office.

The police team, according to him, discovered a bread soaked with petrol in the office, amidst the fire outbreak which was later put out by fire fighters.

He suspected those who jumped into the office were arsonists because they intended to burn the entire office.
