Court Sentenced a Man to Die By Hanging, And a Life Jail Term for Killing Nine-Year-Old Girl in Ogun

An Abeokuta High Court has sentenced a man to die by hanging for shooting a nine-year-old to death at Owode Egba in the Obafemi Owode Local Government Area of Ogun state.

Justice O. Stanley also sentenced the 23-year-old accused, Azeez Akinpelu to life jail for manslaughter and another three-month jail term for illegal possession of firearms.

The prosecutor had told the court that the incident occurred on March 27, 2021, when the accused and his friends fired gunshots into a crowd during the celebration of Atala people Igbein in the Community.

According to the prosecutor, the shot fired by the accused from a locally made pistol hit the girl on her head, and another girl on her hand and leg.

The accused attempted to escape but was overpowered and a locally made pistol, a cartridge, charms, and a knife were found in his bag.

The prosecutor said the two girls were rushed to the Federal Medical Centre, Idi Aba, Abeokuta, but Rokiyat was later transferred to the University College Hospital, Ibadan, where she later died.

She said, the offence committed contravene section 324, 316, 319 and 320 of the criminal code laws of Ogun and sec 27(1)(b)(1) of
firearms Act Cap Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2014.

She thereafter, gave Akinpelu multiple sentence for the offences.

I here by sentence you Azeez Akinpelu to death by hanging “you shall be hung until you are dead, may God have mercy on you.

You are also sentenced to life imprisonment for manslaughter and attempted murder with three-month imprisonment with hard labour for possession of firearms,she said.

Earlier, during the trial, the Senior State Prosecuting Counsel, who pleaded anonymity, said that the convict committed the offence on March 27, 2021 at about 6:00pm at Atala People Igbeyin, Owode Egba, in Obafemi/Owode local government area of Ogun State.

The counsel, said the defendant conspired among his friends to murder one Rokibat Odeyale by shooting her on her head with a local pistol.
