Court Gives Tinubu Deadline To Account For Recovered Abacha Loot Since 1999

A Federal High court in Abuja, has directed the Tinubu admnistration to produce spending details of the $5 billion Abacha loot which was recovered by the Former President Olusegun Obasanjo, Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, Goodluck Jonathan and Muhammadu Buhari admnistrations.

Justice Kolawole Omotosho gave the admnistration a seven day deadline to provide full details of how the four past admnistration spent the loot.

The Judge said the details should include the exact amount stolen by late General Sani Abacha from the treasury, the total amount recovered by Jonathan, Obasanjo, Yar’adua and Buhari admnistrations.

Also, the Judge ruled that the locations of projects executed with the recovered loot, the names of companies who executed the projects and the roles played by the World Bank and other partners should be disclosed within seven days.

The landmark judgenent was delivered by Justice Omotosho last Monday in the freedom of information suit, filed by the Socio-economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP).

The judge rejected plea by Finance Ministry that it has no record of the Abacha loot, and that SERAP has no locus standi to demand the details of the spending of the loot.

Justice Omotosho further directed the Federal Government to refer any allegations of corruption, involving the execution of projects with Abacha loot to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) for investigation.
