Senate Revisits Bill Seeking To Establish Federal University of Technology at Ilaro in Ogun

A bill seeking to upgrade the federal polytechnic, Ilaro, into the Federal University of Technology in Ogun state has passed the second reading in the Senate.

Senator Solomon Adeola, who sponsored the bill during the Thursday plenary, said the proposed institution would fill the technological gap in that part of the southwest region.

The lawmaker recalled that the bill was passed into law by the ninth Senate and sent to the House of Reps for concurrence before the session ended.

The bill which was introduced in 2017 was among several bills whose legislative process was not concluded before the Tenth National Assembly.

Deputy Senate President, Jibrin Barau, who presided over the Thursday plenary put the bill to a voice vote and was approved for further legislation.

In his contribution, Senator Ali Ndume said the proposed University is in line with the country’s educational development drive, saying he served his one-year mandatory National Youth Service, NYSC in the school.

I served in the Federal Polytechnic, Ilaro in 1979 and I know Ilaro well, particularly that there was not much to be done since the infrastructure was already on the ground.

Supporting the bill, Senator representing Niger North Senatorial District, Sani Musa, said, The proposed bill should be supported because the world is driving towards technology now.

Now that the Chairman of Appropriation is the one bringing this bill, I hope he will make adequate appropriation so that the University can function well.
