24 Hour Curfew in Kano, Following Tribunal’s Sack of the Governor

24 Hour Curfew in Kano, Following Tribunal’s Sack of the Governor

Major streets in Kano State are now deserted, following the imposition of a 24 hour curfew, to forestall likely political violence, in the wake of Wednesday’s ruling on the petitions on state’s disputed   2023 governorship poll.

The state governorship tribunal had sacked Governor Abba Yusuf after cancelling 165,000 out of his votes in the poll, and declared his All Progressive Compressive (APC) rival as the winner of the poll.

The political situation is the state is tense, as security forces had been deployed to enforce the curfew, and prevent violent reaction to the Tribunal’s judgement.

The state police commissioner, Mohammed Gumel in a statement said the duration of the curfew was from 6 p.m. on Wednesday till 6 p.m. today.

He warned that defaulters would be arrested and prosecuted.

Meanwhile, the ruling New Nigerian People’s Party (NNPP) has rejected the tribunal, describing it as laughable, and a miscarriage of justice.

The party’s acting national chairman, Kawu Ali, said the judgement would be challenged at the court of appeal.

In a statement issued on Wednesday evening, the command said, “Kano State residents are called upon to note that combined Security Forces have already been dispatched to the nooks and crannies including the entry and exits of the State to ensure enforcement and strict compliance of the Twenty-Four Hours (24hrs) Curfew order as communicated by the State Government via letter with Reference No: K/SEC/H/435/T.1/153 dated 20th September, 2023 taking effect from 6pm of Wednesday, 20th September to 6pm of Thursday, 21st September 2023.

“Violators will be arrested and made to face the full wrath of the law.”
