On Monday 7 July, 2023, we said that ahead of the confirmation of the 48 ministerial nominees by the Senate, Senator Jimoh Ibrahim, APC, Ondo South urged President Bola Tinubu to create the Ministry of Revenue.

According to Ibrahim, the Ministry of Finance plays the role of a Bursar, but there is no Treasurer to keep proper records of revenues generated by the various agencies and motivate them to generate more, adding that Nigeria definitely needs a national treasurer to be symbolised by the Federal Ministry of Revenue.

On Tuesday 8 August, 2023, we said despite calls to reduce the cost of governance, the 48 ministerial nominees whose names were forwarded to the Senate for clearance by President Bola Tinubu, and about 560 commissioners-designates in 27 states of the federation, where elections held in May 2023, may cost the country about N23.4bn in salaries.

Tinubu now surpassed former presidents Obasanjo, Yar’Adua, Jonathan and Buhari to name 48 ministers, setting a new record since Nigeria returned to democracy 24 years ago, which experts said would likely worsen the high governance costs.

On Thursday 10 August, 2023, we said President Bola Tinubu appointed a 400-level student of the University of Ibadan (UI), Orire Agbaje, as a member of the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms. Agbaje is the President of the University of Ibadan Tax Club.

The committee, headed by Taiwo Oyedele, is in charge of several aspects of tax law reforms, fiscal policy design as well as the coordination, harmonisation of taxes, and revenue administration.
