Nigeria’s organized labor has issued a 14-day strike notice to federal government, over its failure to implement the October 2, 2023, agreement.

Nigeria Labor Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) in a joint statement on Thursday, said the 14 days would be counted as from February 9.

The unions said it expects federal government to start implementing the agreements as from February 9, to prevent a nationwide strike at the expiration of the 14-day deadline.

Both NLC and TUC said they regretted issuing a fresh nationwide strike notice, but had no choice, since federal government had failed to fulfill its part of the last October 2 agreement.

Meanwhile, the pensioners have demanded to be included in the tripartite national minimum wage committee set up by federal government to negotiate a new minimum wage for the workers.

Effective February 9 (tomorrow), among others, the two labour unions said, Constrained by this development and recognising the urgency of the situation and the imperative of ensuring the protection and defence of the rights and dignity of Nigerian workers and citizens, the NLC and TUC hereby issue a stern ultimatum to the Federal Government to honour their part of the understanding within 14 days from tomorrow, the 9th day of February 2024.

The Federal Government had among other things promised the implementation of a N35,000 wage award for civil servants which however has not been paid up to date.
