Ogun Sets To Unveil Compressed Natural Gas Powered Mass Transit Buses

Ogun State is set for the take off of its first phase of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) powered mass transit buses and electric powered motorcycles.

The first phase will kick off with 20 mass transit buses, using CNG instead of diesel. A team of four engineers, have arrived the state from India, to begin the process of converting the vehicles.

Secretary to the state government, Tokunbo Talabi, said the conversion process would take between four to six weeks.

He assured that the state’s mass transit buses would start running on CNG in coming days, ahead of the first week of August deadline, promised by Governor Dapo Abiodun.

Talabi explained that the four Indian engineers would work on the pilot project, and initiate the first phase of the state’s gas mobility programme

They would also help in preparing a process map for the phased implementation of the CNG conversion of commercial buses in the state.

Already, Talabi said the Indian engineers had started training local local technicians and auto mechanics on the CNG conversion of vehicles.

Last March, the state government took delivery of CNG conversion kits for the pilot phase of Ogun State mass transit vehicles to use CNG.

The statement reads, “The CNG team is on the ground. I was part of the team that received the CNG kits on behalf of the government early in the year, and I visited the project site this morning (Tuesday). His Excellency, Prince Dapo Abiodun, is a man of his word, and such a highly progressive Governor deserves all necessary support for Ogun State to continue progressing.

“The aim is to improve and modernise bus operations in Ogun State by converting buses to Compressed Natural Gas by equipping them with the latest technology to improve environmental and operational performance”.
