NUT Awaiting Incentives Approved By the Buhari Administration

Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) says it still awaiting the implementation of the package of incentives approved by the former President Buhari’s administration for teachers in public schools in 2020.

The package included a special salary scale for basic and secondary schools teachers, as well as raising the retirement age of teachers from 60 to 65 years, and service tears from 35 to 40 years.

The Union’s National President, Titus Mba, at a news conference in Abuja, said the other incentives not implemented are low cost housing for teachers serving in rural areas, and sponsorship of at least one refresher training yearly.

Another incentive was bursary award for students studying education courses in the colleges of education and universities, stipends and automatic jobs.

The NUT President speaking at a news conference organized to mark the 2023 world teachers day said the elongation of service year was the only one among the incentives implemented only at the federal level.

He asked the new minister of education, Professor Tahir Maman, to revisit the package of incentive for the implementation for teachers.

The NUT President said: “So many incentives were rolled out about two years ago. The key one was an increase in years of service but the truth is that this is the only pronouncement that kick-started both at the centre and to an extent at the level of our states.

“As I speak Honourable Minister, a good number of states are yet to even key into this retirement age for teachers. We just took the statistics two weeks back and pleaded to all the state governors that they should use the occasion of this year’s Teachers Day and make a pronouncement of the retirement age and other incentives.

“Let me say categorically, up till now, none of the other incentives have gotten across the Nigerian teachers and we believe that with the commitment of the Minister, the incentives that were pronounced should be given to our teeming teachers in Nigeria.

“So the answer is most of the laudable promises are yet to get across to our teeming teachers.”
