NLC Calls for Yearly Review of National Minimum Wage, Instead Of Current Five-Year Period

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has proposed a review of the national minimum wage every year to cope with the inflation trend and the value of the naira.

The NLC president, Joe Ajaero, made the call at the national labor adjudication and arbitration forum, organized by the national employer’s consultative association.

Ajaero asked the federal government to rethink the present five-year cycle of national minimum wage review, adding that it was not favorable to the workers.

According to him, it was wrong for salaries to stagnate for five years while other valuables were changing.

Already, the federal government has set up a tripartite of government, labor, and the private sector to negotiate the new national minimum wage.

The NLC president said the organized labor was not happy with the implementation of the N35,000 wage award and agreed to cushion the harsh effects of petrol subsidy removal.
