Nigeria Records First Case Of Anthrax

Nigeria has recorded its first confirmed case of anthrax in Niger State.

However, the disease was discovered in a multi space animal farmer of cattle, sheep and cattle at Garji on Abuja-kaduna expressway in Suleja Local Government Area.

Federal ministry of agriculture on Monday said it was notified by the office of the chief veterinary officer of Nigeria that last July 14,

some animals are manifesting symptoms of suspected case of the disease in the farm.

The ministry said a rapid response team sent to the farm conducted a preliminary investigations and collected samples from the affected animals.

According to the ministry, the samples sent to the national veterinary research institute laboratory confirmed the diagnosis, marking the first recorded case of anthrax in Nigeria in recent years.

The disease is caused by spore forming bacterious, which affects animals, such as cattle, sheeps and goats.

He said that federal government, in collaboration with the Niger state government, had taken proactive measures to ensure the outbreak was controlled and contained quickly in Nigeria.

The ministry said the disease which broke out in Ghana weeks ago killed all the infected animals.
