The husband and son of a 53 year old patient who died at Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Abeokuta, have subjected a female doctor and a nurse to severe beating.

The patient whose condition was critical, according to the Nigeria Medical Association (NMA), was rushed to the hospital on Tuesday. She was admitted for heart failure and died hours later.

Chairman of the Ogun State branch of the NMA, Doctor Kunle Ashimi addressing a news conference in Abeokuta later on Wednesday, said the association would no longer tolerate a repeat of the incident.

Ashimi said the husband and son of the late patient slapped the female doctor on duty, and she had to be rescued from further beating by other people in the hospital.

Ashimi said the late patient’s son later beat a nurse, despite the presence of police, adding that both the husband and his son were later taken to the Kemta police station.

The NMA Chairman said doctors would take the matter to court today, and would henceforth pursue the prosecution of those involved to a logical conclusion.

He warned patients and relatives using hospitals in the state to stop assaulting doctors and health workers.
