Mayorkun discloses why he kept his Mother’s Identity a Secret

Nigerian singer Adewale Mayowa Emmanuel, popularly known as Mayorkun, recently shared the reasons behind his decision to keep his mother’s identity undisclosed for many years, driven by a desire for a normal, low-key lifestyle.

During his appearance on the latest episode of the Tea with Tay Podcast, Mayorkun revealed that he and his brother wanted to lead ordinary lives before achieving fame.

Their mother, Toyin Adewale, being a renowned Nollywood actress, made maintaining a sense of normalcy challenging.

Hence, to attain the freedom they sought, they deliberately kept their mother’s identity under wraps.

Mayorkun explained, Growing up, my brother and I didn’t like the fact that our mom was a popular actress because we wanted freedom, but with her fame came fake attention and all.

Another motivation behind the secrecy was Mayorkun’s wish not to be judged based on his mother’s status.

He wanted people to appreciate him for who he was, independent of any familial associations.

I hated being treated differently, not because you like me but because I am Toyin Adewale’s son, he emphasized.

The singer recounted his time at the University of Lagos, where he studied accounting, and shared the efforts he made to conceal his mother’s identity throughout his four years of higher education.

Even in my university, people didn’t know she was my mother for four years. I was intentional about this.

My mum brought food to me at school once, and a girl saw her. I quickly ran to her to get what she came with just so no one else saw her, Mayorkun revealed.

As the oldest among his parents’ three children and born into a family of entertainers, Mayorkun’s journey to becoming an entertainer himself reflects his commitment to maintaining a semblance of normality despite his family’s entertainment background.
