Massive Flood Wreaks Havoc In Ibadan, Submerges Building, Collapses Bridges

Residents of Ibadan and its environs in Oyo state are groaning over the massive flood caused by heavy rainfall which began in the city since last Friday.

Residents have been battling with the massive flooding, which submerged buildings and collapsed a strategic bridge at Olodo garage along Ibadan-Iwo road.

Areas mostly affected included Apata, Ajibode Oke Ona, near the university of Ibadan, Akinyele, Ido and Inalende

The massive flood also devastated roads and bridges at Monatan, Lalupon, Ejioku, Kumapayi, and other communities on Iwo road.

At Inalende, a three storey building collapsed on Monday during a heavy rainfall, while buildings were submerged at Ajibode Oke Ona.

The collapse of Olodo bridge stopped movement of vehicles from Ibadan and to Ibadan along Ibadan-Iwo road.

DAILY POST learnt from distraught residents that the bridge collapsed during a downpour on Monday. The situation has made it difficult for commuters and residents to cross the bridge, leading to heavy traffic along the road.

Motorcyclists, car owners, and other pedestrians were left stranded on either side of the link road, while vehicles and houses were submerged in the deluge, compelling certain residents to evacuate their homes as of Monday.

A resident who identified himself as Mr Fashina explained that he spent the night at the roadside because he could not pass the road to his home on the other side on Sunday.

He said: “It is better to stay back and monitor my wife and children at home over the phone than for me to enter the water.

“I was inside a commercial car when we noticed the water had overflowed the bridge. Some vehicles were trying to manoeuvre to the other side, but I told the driver to drop me; it was at that point everyone noticed the bridge had even been washed away.”
