House of Reps Calls for Criminalization of Imported Adire/Kampala, Tie and Dye Fabrics

House of Representatives has asked the Federal Government to criminalize the importation of Adire/Kampala into the country.

The lawmakers say they are worried over the influx of foreign imitation of Adire/Kampala, Tie and Dye into the country.

The House made the resolution following the adoption of a motion raised by Honorable Afolabi Afuape during the Tuesday plenary of the House.

Afuape said the ban on imported Adire/Kampala fabrics would protect the local cottage industry and conserve foreign exchange.

The House directed its commerce committee to liaise with the directorate of employment for the establishment of training and orientation program for local fabric producers.

According to the House, the proposed training would be centered on skills, quality control, marketing and business management.

Moving the motion, Mr Afuape said the influx of foreign imitations of Adire/Kampala, tie and dye into Nigeria’s market had negatively impacted the local industry.

This, according to him, has led to a decline in the livelihood of local producers and job losses.

It urged proper monitoring of relevant agencies charged with evaluating the periodic progress of the Nigerian cottage industry.

The House also mandated the Committee on Information, National Orientation, Ethics and Values in collaboration with the National Orientation Agency to launch a nationwide campaign to promote the cultural significance of Adire/Kampala.
