Gunmen have attacked the campaign convoy of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) governorship candidate, Murtala Ajaka, ahead of the November 11 Kogi state governorship poll.

Many people were injured, including a police superintendent, who sustained bullet wounds.

Several vehicles, including two of the operational vehicles of the gunmen, were also destroyed during the exchange of gunfire between the governor’s security team and the gunmen.

The campaign convoy was heading from Magongo to Lokoja after the candidate’s consultations with major stakeholders in the town.

The gunmen, after being overwhelmed by the security operatives attached to the candidate, escaped into the bush, abandoning their two vehicles.

Spokesman for the state police command, William Anya, said the state police commissioner has ordered an immediate investigation into the incident.
