Former Barcelona Winger Amuneke Expresses Interest in Becoming Super Eagles Head Coach

Former Barcelona winger Emmanuel Amuneke has expressed his readiness to become the head coach of the Super Eagles following the uncertainties surrounding the future of Coach Jose Peseiro.

Peseiro’s contract with the Nigerian Football Federation (NFL) expired immediately after the conclusion of the 2023 African Cup of Nations (AFCON).

A clause in Peseiro’s contract reportedly stipulated that the NFL would consider extending the deal with the Portuguese coach should Nigeria reach the semifinals of the AFCON.

Peseiro fulfilled that obligation by guiding the Super Eagles to the final, where they narrowly lost 2-1 to host Cote d’Ivoire.

Still, there is no word yet from the NFF regarding the contract situation of Peseiro, who was on Tuesday bestowed with a national honor, a member of the Order of the Niger, alongside his Super Eagles players.

However, Amuneke, who coached the Golden Eagles to glory at the FIFA Under-17 World Cup in 2017, has revealed he is ready to serve Nigeria again.

Amuneke, who is currently a consultant to the coaching crew of Zambian club Zanaco, said it would be a welcome development for him if allowed to handle the three-time AFCON winners.

“I’ve never coached the Super Eagles, I’ve only gone twice to assist someone but coaching Super Eagles on my own I have not.

“But of course Nigeria is my country and the national team we are all part of it and when the opportunity comes and Nigerians feel that we can add something to the national team of course it’s a welcome development.”
