FG To Subsidize Adire Fabric Production to Promote Local Patronage

Federal Government (FG) has proposed subsidizing of Adire fabric production to promote the local patronage and export of the fabric.

It is also considering imposing a ban on the importation of Adire fabrics, including made-in-china Adire into the country.

Humanitarian and poverty alleviation, Dr. Betta Edu, announced this during a visit to the Adire mall at Itoku, in Abeokuta, on Saturday, as part of her visit to the state.

She said there was the need to upgrade and increase the local production of Adire fabric, to meet the local demand, adding that federal government intends to push for its patronage in the world market.

This will be followed by subsidizing of the local Adire fabric to wipe out fake Adire from the Nigerian market.

The minister said this would create new jobs, and help to boost the micro and macro economy and assist Nigeria to become a manufacturing hub, and not an importing nation.

She appreciated Governor Abiodun for planning to create Adire hubs in Abuja, for the sale of the fabric.

Dr. Betta Edu emphasized the need to promote both traditional and modern Adire production, underlining its global recognition and appeal.

The government plans to initiate training programs and create new clusters for Adire in two other senatorial districts where it currently has limited presence.

Following this training, a fashion show dedicated to Adire will be organized to introduce these locally produced fabrics to new customers and promote their sales and exports.

Adire is a highly valued fabric known for its distinctive patterns and designs. This endeavor is aligned with the President’s goal of lifting 50 million Nigerians out of poverty within the next 42 months, with Adire production as one of the avenues to achieve this ambitious target.
