Father Of Two Slumped and Died, In Ogun, While Watching Nigeria-South Africa AFCON Semi Final

A 43-year-old Sale Representatives of Nestle PLC, Mikhail Osundiji, has died in Abeokuta, the Ogun state capital, while watching the semi-final of the AFCON match between Nigeria and South Africa on Wednesday evening.

He slumped and died after the referee cancelled the goal scored by Victor Osimihen, which would have increased Nigeria’s goal to two, against none for South Africa.

The tragic incident took place while Osundiji, a father of two, was watching the match live at a football viewing center in the Olomore Housing Estate in the city.

He was the fourth Nigerian who died, while watching the critical match which Nigeria won 4-2 after a penalty shoot-out.

Others were a former member of the House of Representatives, Caro Ojuogbo, as well as a youth corps member in Adamawa state, and a deputy bursar of Kwara State University, Malete.

An elder sister of Osundiji, Mrs. Adetunji Nofisat who spoke with newsmen said her brother after the cancelation of Osimhen’s goal, breathed out loudly, slumped and died.

That was when other people at the football viewing centre rushed to him and took him to one of the private hospitals in Olomoore before the doctor on duty pronounced him dead, she said.

She added that the deceased was buried on Thursday afternoon according to the Islamic rites, explaining that we cannot take his corpse to Okuku in Osun State because he still has a father, mother and two children who are of 12 and seven years of age.

She appealed to the state governor, Dapo Abiodun to come to the assistance of the family, particularly through scholarships to enable the children left behind by the deceased to complete their education, up to the university level.

He was buried on Thursday afternoon in accordance with Muslim rite.
