Bauchi Introduces Stipends to Boost Girl Child Enrolment in Public Secondary Schools

Bauchi State Government has introduced a programme to provide incentive for girl child between the ages of 10 and 20 to be in school.

Under the programme, girls in the junior secondary schools, would receive a stipend of N5,000 per session, while those in senior secondary schools, will get N10,000.

The stipend being paid under the adolescent girls initiative for learning and empowerment, is a World Bank assisted programme to encourage girls between ages of 10 and 20 to be in schools.

The State Education Commissioner, Jamila Dahiru, told newsmen in Bauchi that the scheme was introduced to assist girl child who dropped out of school due to financial problems.

Apart from the payment of stipend, she said the programme would create space for learning, improve the existing infrastructure in schools and recruit more teachers.

“The second component which is ‘fostering an enabling environment for girls’ promotes behavioural change through communication campaigns, engagement with traditional rulers and advocacy.

“Providing girls with critical life skills and knowledge for navigating adulthood and digital literacy at all learning platforms as well as providing financial support to poor households under the conditional cash transfer will be made effective,” Mrs Dahira narrated.

She said that the project’s third component is ‘system strengthening and project management,’ where the State Project Implementation Unit (SPIU) team must be very active including the technical and community through the School Base Management Committees (SBMCs).

AGILE is a World Bank-assisted project of the Federal Ministry of Education geared at improving secondary education opportunities for adolescent girls aged between 10 and 20.
