The Revenue Mobilization and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) has been directed to review its proposed 114 per cent increase in salaries for the political office holders and judicial officers, including judges.

President Tinubu issued the directive on Monday, at ongoing the Nigerian Judiciary Conference of Supreme Court justices holding at the National Judicial Institute in Abuja.

The President, who was represented by the Justice Minister, Chief Lateef Fagnemi, asked the revenue commission, in reviewing its proposed 114 per cent raise in salaries, to be realistic, and ensure that it reflects the present economic situation in the country.

Tinubu said he was optimistic that the review would be concluded as soon as possible, to make the judiciary in Nigeria more independent as in other countries.

He asked judges in the country to be a little more patient.

Tinubu also asked Nigeria’s politicians to stop blaming the judiciary for their woes, adding that myopic criticism and attacks on judges must stop.

It is the Judiciary alone that can build the confidence of investors that commercial disputes can be resolved fairly and speedily and in a manner that preserves and improves their investment.

Such a realization alone will significantly improve our position to be an investment destination.

I seize this opportunity to make one sentence on the appointment of private legal practitioners into our appellate courts.

Considering the constitutional provisions in practice in other jurisdictions, I am of the strong view that to further strengthen our appellate court, qualified, experienced and diligent private legal practitioners should be considered for appointment to both the Appeal and Supreme Court, as the nation will benefit from this.

I renew my commitment and affirm that I will discharge all my obligations to the judiciary regardless.

I look forward to contributing my quota to the improvement of the welfare of judicial officers.
