Tinubu Assents To Bill Unifying Retirement Age Of All Judges To 70 Years

The retirement age of all judges in the country is now 70 years

This followed the signing of one of the constitutional amendment bills by president Tinubu, which unified the retirement age and pensions rights of judicial officers

The bill is the first which Tinubu would assented to since assuming office on Monday, last week

Until Thursday, there was a discrepancy in the retirement ages of the high court judges and those of justices of the supreme and appeal courts

Before now, judges of high courts retired at the age of 65 years, while those of apex court and appeal court retired at 70 years.

Tinubu, according to a statement issued by Director of Information at the State House, Mr. Abiodun Oladunjoye, signed the bill into law as part of powers vested in him under the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended).The president signed into law the “Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (Fifth Alteration) (No.37), 2023,” presented by the outgoing 9th National Assembly.Speaking while signing the amendment bill into law, Tinubu pledged his administration’s dedication to strengthening the judiciary, ensuring the rule of law, and empowering judicial officers to execute their responsibilities effectively.
