Three Officers of NDLEA Injured In a Gunfight with a Drug Cartel in Edo

Three operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have sustained injuries in a gunfight with armed hoodlums of a drug cartel inside the Opuje Forest Reserve in Edo State.

One of the NDLEA operatives, who was shot in the head during the shooting incident on Monday, underwent surgery on Wednesday to remove the bullets lodged in his brain.

NDLEA spokesman Femi Babafemi said on Thursday that hoodlums had blocked roads in the Opaye community in the own west local government area to prevent NDLEA operatives from accessing the drug warehouses in the forest.

Babafemi said the cannabis just harvested was stored in the warehouses in the forest for distribution during the yuletide season.

According to him, the hoodlums opened gunfire on the NDLEA operatives, who replied that the gunfire lasted for about two hours before leaving the axis.

The operational vehicles of the NDLEA were riddled with gunshots.

The statement quoted the Chairman of the NDLEA, Buba Marwa, as vowing that those sponsoring attacks on the operatives would know no rest until they were all brought before the law to face the consequences of their action and their criminal trade terminated.

“While commending the professional conduct of the officers involved in the operation, Marwa said the incident will not in any way deter the agency from continuing its ongoing offensive action against drug barons and cartels who are merchants of death bent on destroying the lives of innocent citizens especially the youths for their comfort across the nook and cranny of the country.”
