Ogun State government has said the proposed dry port at Kajola, near Abeokuta, would take advantage of the Lagos-Ibadan double rail and single rail tracks which converged at Papalanto.

Transportation Commissioner, Engineer Gbenga Dairo, spoke on the project during a stakeholder’s engagement meeting at Papalanto.

He said the site was carefully chosen, because of its proximity to the convergence of the rail tracks which connect Apapa seaport in Lagos.

The proposed dry port project is to be sited on 600 hectares of land.

The project engineer in the State Ministry of Works, Engineer Olatunde Phillips said, the affected land covers Abese, Soderu, and Olorunsogo villages

Federal controller of works in Ogun state, represented by Mrs. Forosola Oloyede said, all federal roads in the corridor of the project would be rehabilitated.

Alkali said that efforts were still being made to remove the NCS building which is still impeding the other two tracks.

He explained that three coaches of 30 wagons would be loaded daily from the Apapa ports to Ibadan, totaling 90 trips per month, which will increase to nine trips per day and 270 trips per month when they remove the Customs scanner building.

Also, the NRC’s Lagos District Manager, Augustine Arisa noted that the cargo operates fully via the standard gauge rail, which is 1,435 millimeters wider than the narrow gauge with 1,067 millimeters, which connects to Kano and beyond.

Arisa added that the corporation had plans to extend the standard gauge rail from Moniya to Kano, adding that while one of the tracks was now in use, the other two tracks end at the customs building at APM Terminal, which could function when the building is removed.
