Ogun Unveils N5 Billion Intervention Scheme to Tackle Rising Inflation and Food Crisis

The Ogun State government has unveiled a special N5 billion intervention scheme to tackle the food crisis and the rising level of inflation in the state.

The N5 billion package, announced by Governor Dapo Abiodun on Friday in Abeokuta, covered education, health, food palliatives, and the welfare of civil servants.

Under the package, each of the 100,000 indigent students in public primary schools and the 27,600 in public secondary schools will receive N10,000 each.

Their counterparts in public tertiary institutions will receive N50,000 each. In addition, each of the 850,000 students in public schools would get a minimum of five exercise books.

The governor also announced health insurance coverage for over 70,000 people, including pregnant women, children, the elderly, market women, and those in the informal sector.

Also, pregnant women under the Ibidero Health Scheme would get free prenatal care and an additional N5,000 for each child delivered.

For the state civil servants, the governor said N500 million had been voted monthly for the payment of outstanding deductions made from their salaries.

He said: “As our administration acknowledges the concerns raised by many of our citizens regarding the rising food prices and shortages, coupled with the depreciation of the Naira, we identify with you and are taking proactive measures to alleviate the impact of these challenges to guarantee the welfare, well-being, and wellness of our citizens in this difficult time.

“The State has taken the following steps: Education Sector: Providing a minimum of 5 exercise books for all 850,000 students in our public primary and secondary schools.

“We are providing a one-time N10,000 education support grant for at least 100,000 pupils in our public primary and secondary schools in the state. Providing all 27,600 indigent students in tertiary institutions nationwide with an education grant of N50,000 each.”
