Ibadan Explosions Traced To Explosive Device Stored By Illegal Miners, Makinde Says 77 Persons Injured

Oyo State Government says it has traced the explosions that rocked Ibadan, the state capital on Tuesday night, to explosive devices stored in a building by illegal miners.

Governor Seyi Makinde said so far 77 persons were found injured in the explosions, and most of them had been treated and discharged.

Reports and sources said deaths were also recorded in the explosions.

The Governor, during a visit to the source of the explosive device, that caused the explosions, said they were stored by illegal miners who occupied one of the buildings in Bodija.

Makinde said all those found culpable would be prosecuted, promising that the government would foot the bills of those injured, and assist in rebuilding houses affected in the explosion.

The explosions which were accompanied by vibrations destroyed a section of the governor’s office, former Chief Bola Ige’s house, as well as buildings at Eleyele, Apete, New Garage, Bashorun, Akobo, Ologuneru, and Sango.

The governor also revealed that the medical bills of victims will be picked by the government while promising to ensure that all those whose houses were affected were supported to rebuild their lives.

The governor urged residents to be calm, noting that rescue operations had already started at the scene of the incident.

Earth-moving equipment, ambulances, emergency lights, and security were deployed to the scene of the incident.

The wounded and injured are being treated and moved to public and private hospitals within Ibadan.

Medical personnel are on standby at these hospitals to provide all needed assistance to the injured.

I urge all residents to please call 615 for any emergencies they may be experiencing at this time and to remain calm and stay away from the immediate scene of the incident to allow rescue operations to be carried out without interference, he added.
