Godwin Emefiele Of CBN Charged To Court By  DSS

The Department of State Services (DSS) says it has complied with the Thursday’s order of an Abuja high court on the continued detention of the suspended governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele.

The court had ordered the security agency to either release Emefiele from its custody, or charged him to court.

Hours after the court’s order, spokesman of the agency, Dr Peter Afunaya, said it had charged the suspended chairman of the apex bank to court.

DSS recalled that it obtained a court’s order in 2022 to detain Emefiele over a criminal investigations, but he managed to secure a counter court’s order restricting it from arresting him.

The agency, however, said it eventually arrested him in June this year, over fresh criminal offences, one of which was the basis for his fresh prosecution.

Emefiele had been detained by DSS, hours after he was suspended from office by president Tinubu last June 9.

The statement read:

“Sequel to an Abuja High Court Order of today, July 13, 2023, the Department of State Services (DSS) hereby confirms that Mr Godwin Emefiele has been charged to Court in compliance with the Order.

“The public may recall that the Service had, in 2022, applied for a Court Order to detain him in respect of a criminal investigation.

“Though he obtained a restraining Order from an FCT High Court, the Service, however, arrested him in June, 2023, on the strength of suspected fresh criminal infractions/information, one of which forms the basis for his current prosecution.

“The Service assures the public of professionalism, justice and fairness in handling this matter and indeed the discharge of its duties within the confines of the law”.
